The Vanilla Highwayman is in a very similar spot to the Grave Robber, in that he specializes in damage and yet doesn’t really do all that much damage. Worse than that, his skills are kind of boring, and current vanilla builds tend to lean heavily on riposte. I wanted to spice up the Highwayman life and play up his theme of being quick, dodgy, and deadly.
Going into this mod, I knew I wanted to add a handful of “free actions”, since it’s a huge amount of unexplored design space. I also feel that an extra action conveys the theme of quickness more effectively than the actual speed stat. To that end, Gut Shot and Cold Blood have replaced the middling Tracking & Pistol Shot as the core of the Highwayman’s ranged build. As with all free actions, there needs to be a reason why you don’t just use it on the first round every battle. The self-debuff on Gut Shot, combined with the setup required for a devastating Cold Blood make the choice of when to use your new “double tap” combo a bit more interesting.
